The global COVID-19 pandemic has challenged orchestras worldwide. The Boston Symphony looks back at an unusual and unprecedented year with this 2019-20 Annual Report, while one may look ahead to a vibrant future. Again, this Annual Report is a tool of transparency to all stakeholders and supporters of the BSO. It’s state-of-the-art style and a very good example to others.
The BSO’s story of 2019–20 is one of resilience and adaptation in the face of adversity, bolstered by the dedication of all members of the BSO family – musicians, donors, subscribers, concertgoers, broadcast audiences, volunteers, and staff. When the pandemic forced the BSO to close the doors to live audiences, the donors and audience support created new ways to share music with all, ensuring the continuation of our mission and fulfilling BSO’s responsibility to audiences and communities. Meanwhile, as the society reckoned with racial injustice and inequity, the BSO turned its attention inward to recognize its role in past wrongs and to forge a path toward righting them, a process that continues in earnest.
In this Annual Report, one will find many stories of how the BSO, Boston Pops, and Tanglewood persisted through the challenges of this difficult year and how the broad support of musicmaking made this possible. The unwavering dedication and generosity of all supporters sustain the BSO.
