Conductors Call for the 7th Mahler Competition – application deadline is November 30th!

Up-and-coming conductors can apply for the renowned Mahler Competition by the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra until November 30th. The 7th edition will take place in Bamberg from July 7th to 15th, 2023.

Professional conductors of all nationalities who will be no older than 35 on November 30, 2022 are welcome. From the (usually) around 500 applications, 14 to 16 participants will be announced at the beginning of February 2023.

Reflecting the current situation and since 2020 at the latest, the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra has been considering how the competition should develop. According to director Marcus Rudolf Axt, one essential aspect has become even more important: networking for the candidates and the opportunity to continue their education in Bamberg. In comparison to other competitions all candidates are invited to stay until the final concert and take individual advice and lasting experiences from Bamberg with them through discussions with members of the jury and the orchestra.

Bamberg also offers conditions that no other competition can offer: Participation is free and all travel and accommodation costs are covered. An important factor in times of crisis! The orchestra is available to all candidates from the first round longer than anywhere else – and in full.
The jury includes Barbara Hannigan, Thomas Hampson, Pamela Rosenberg and the chief conductor of Bamberg, Jakub Hrůša. The patron Marina Mahler supports the jury as an honorary member.
